Terre Haute, IN - The American Red Cross hosts blood drives throughout the years, but after disaster strikes drastic efforts are needed

"The need is so great right now, not because necessarily the people affected by the hurricane but the fact that the blood drives that were supposed to be held there. The processing centers and different things all getting shut down," said Ashley Hughes, American Red Cross Engagement Rep.

Every pint of blood that is donated has the opportunity to save three people's lives. With that in mind, the Wabash Valley Red Cross opened their doors for the community to contribute.

"We're just trying to get as much help as we can to the individuals there suffering, as well as maintain our blood supply across the entire country," says Hughes.

Dan Smith, a Terre Haute native, has donated blood for years and he did let the chance to help others in need slip past him.

"I've been donating blood since high school. It's something easy to do. It doesn't take a whole lot of time, yet it helps others in the community," says Smith.

No matter the cause, Smith says he is proud to continue to come out and donate. "I'm really happy to come out and do my part in making our society better and the community better. Whether it's those affected in Florida or here in the Terre Haute area."

Ashley Hughes says in times of serious need, like now, the Wabash Valley has always responded well.  "There's been wonderful feedback from the community, people coming out that haven't given in years but know that there's a need right now. "

In addition to donating blood, the Wabash Valley Red Cross is always accepting volunteers as they account for 90% of their help.
